After a Hurricane -- Lesson Plan for Youth Educators

GLE/LA Content Standards Benchmarks:

Objectives:

  • Develop empathy for youth displaced as a result of a hurricane or natural disaster
  • Practice decision-making skills you would use after a disaster
  • Identify feelings and actions encountered by children after a disaster.

Target Audience:

  • Junior High and High School Students

Delivery Mode:

  • Group Meeting such as 4-H club meeting

Time Allotted:

  • 30 minutes

Materials Needed for the Lesson:

Clipboard; matching game for grief steps activity; flipchart, chalkboard or dry erase board, markers (enough for each participant), construction paper “bricks” educational leaflets “Common Reaction to Crisis by Ages,” “ Helping Children Deal with Disaster,” “Strategies for Helping Youth Cope with Disaster,” and “What You Can Do to Help.”

  • 2 to 50
